Abstract: If you are reading this issue in New Zealand, our first professional paper could not be more topical. In the aftermath of Cyclones Hale and Gabrielle, Tim Payn’s paper breaks down the issue of woody debris movement in and out of forest. It also gives us a stocktake of the most recent and topical research relating to woody debris flow. The paper provides us with the reality check that we cannot have zero debris escape and the focus needs to be on mitigation, and outlines an excellent example of risk-based riparian setback modelling.
