Abstract: Tree roots reinforce soils and contribute to reducing the risk of slope failure. When trees are harvested the potential for failure to occur increases until the new crop reaches canopy closure. Managing this ‘window of vulnerability’ is becoming an increasingly important consideration for steepland forest managers.
