Abstract: Changes in rural land use are a common occurrence in New Zealand. These changes enhance returns to land owners, create new downstream industries, and stimulate the entry of new capital and skills. Readily-available information to understand and compare investment returns from alternative land uses encourages this type of beneficial innovation. This paper considers three obstacles to comparing financial returns from forestry with other land uses.
