Abstract: The value of forest ecosystems is usually underestimated if only the direct immediate commercial value of timber and timber products is considered. Forest ecosystems have many other resources and uses to offer. This article reviews the relevance of social and environmental values for plantation forest management and the methodologies that could be used to achieve this valuation. It also presents preliminary results and progress of research being undertaken to assess the social and environmental values of plantation forests in Canterbury and Hawkes Bay.
