Abstract: Copper chrome arsenates (CCA) wood preservatives have been used in New Zealand for more than 50 years. However, the presence of arsenic alone has been sufficient for interest groups to highlight the potential public health or perceived environmental risks from contact with the chemical or possible leachate from treated timber. This paper discusses the deregulation of CCA wood preservatives, which first started in Europe. The implications of the use of approved alternatives or substitute preservative treatments for CCA in New Zealand are discussed.
