Abstract: In this address, the author set out to place the task of the new Department of Conservation in the wider context of changes affecting the New Zealand public sendee. These issues are specifically linked to the problems which face the forestry profession. The return lo holistic thought as the touchstone of the public servant's reponsibility to the NZ community is seen as a requisite for all professionals. The author argues this in terms of both cultural traditions in New Zealand and points to a special role for the Department as a forerunner of new patterns m the shape and style of the public service.
