The Role of Enginnering in New Zealand Protection Forest Management

Abstract: The view is expressed that engineering will have an important role in New Zealand protection forests in the future. A brief history is given of the part played by engineering up until the present. The problems facing the protection forest manager are outlined and related to engineering. It is postulated that the two immediate requirements of protection forests are better maps and improved access. A network of graded and surfaced mountain paths is recommended and narrow vehicles to traverse these paths are described. Brief mention is made of engineering structures for correcting erosion.
