Abstract: The pulp and paper industry as at present established in New Zealand draws its raw material from large exotic forests on the central North Island plateau. Their establishment and subsequent general history are well known to all. This paper is confined to this region because as yet it is only here that the pulp and paper industry has had a large-scale influence.
This paper seeks to show the impact these large integrated industries are having on such an even-aged, unmanaged estate, their only available source of supply. It outlines the problems thus created and the measures to be taken in future to provide an ever-increasing supply of high quality produce from these forests.
