PRESIDENT'S COLUMN
Dear Member
I am excited about the upcoming conference in Nelson next week and look forward to seeing many of you there. The conference committee has been diligently preparing the final details for both the conference and field trips. With a strong turnout of members, this event will be a valuable opportunity for networking, addressing the challenges we face, and celebrating our awardees. If you have any feedback or suggestions for the Institute, please feel free to seek me out at the conference. I am keen to hear your perspectives as the Council continues to consider the future of NZIF.
I strongly encourage you to attend the AGM, where we will make important decisions regarding the Constitution, which must be updated in accordance with the new Act by next year. This is also a crucial opportunity for the Council to gather direction from members on the Institute's future. I have previously mentioned the challenges related to volunteerism. Currently, I dedicate around 35-40 hours a week to the Institute, and I will not be standing for re-election. We need to address how future Presidents will manage this role, and the AGM will be a key occasion to start this discussion.
Forestry has been prominently featured in the media recently, with issues such as mill shutdowns, pest invasions, and concerns about pines overtaking farms. We have responded to these issues through media releases and background information to reporters, often seeking to correct misleading statements. We rely on scientific data and the professional expertise of our members for accurate information. Additionally, we have been conducting surveys to gather insights on topics where data is lacking, such as afforestation areas and pest management costs. While these surveys are not scientific, they help us provide informed responses. I appreciate all who have participated in these surveys and encourage continued engagement.
We have had a busy time with consultations over the last fortnight with three submitted, including the 30 page submission on the second emissions reduction plan. I would like to thank Kit Richards, Rob Millar and Greg Adlam for all the efforts that have put into these submissions, along with all members who have provided input. Submissions sometimes seem a thankless task and we often feel they are ignored; however they are important to enable us refer to them when talking to media to show we have been actively saying something for a number of years. All submission are on our website for members to view.
Today is the final day to vote for our nominated Fellows. Please make sure to cast your vote at SurveyMonkey link. The rules require a minimum number of votes for a nominee to be elected as a Fellow, so your participation is crucial and shows respect to the nominees.
Lastly, I would like to extend my congratulations to Don Hammond on his appointment as Chair of WPMA. We have a strong collaborative relationship with WPMA through the Pan Sector Forum, and I look forward to working closely with Don in his new role.
Regards
James

Important Notice Regarding Email Delivery Issues - Xtra/Hotmail
We have received a few reports from members with xtra.co.nz (and potentially Hotmail) email addresses who are not receiving correspondence from NZIF, despite our emails being successfully sent.
Unfortunately, this issue appears to be outside of our control, but we recommend the following steps to help resolve the problem:
- Check if NZIF emails are going to the sp*m folder: you need to access your emails using the xtra webmail, not Outlook, one of the folders is a sp*m folder you can’t see in Outlook physically, if you see it there via the webmail then right click on the email and say it is not sp*m.
- You need to contact Xtra/Hotmail tech support who will contact smx who does the mail filtering for xtra/hotmail, and tell them to whitelist our domain @nzif.org.nz
If you have an alternative email to use you may want to consider changing this on your profile.
The Forest Growers Levy Trust (FGLT) Survey

Blindly electrifying everything is not working – and ignores our best battery !
“A blind commitment to electrification is only likely to leave New Zealand well short in its energy needs, says the head of Bioenergy New Zealand’s solid bioenergy group.
Rob Mallinson says the wholesale push for “electrification of everything” in New Zealand, including industrial process heat and transport, has painted the energy source as a silver bullet to deal with decarbonisation.
LOCAL SECTION EVENTS
NZ Log Exports - the world is rapidly changing - Report on this event
Presenter: Chris Rayes, Marketing Director, Rayonier Matariki Forests; NZ Log Exports
There were 14 attendees from both the forest growing and harvesting/marketing factions within Hawkes Bay.
The state of the log export market was exposed, including discussion about supply/demand issues, and the costs/regulation factors imposed by both Port authorities govt. Export costs both in shipping and at the receiving Ports are also increasing.
Our absolute dependence on the China market is a very real concern, and that economy is performing poorly at present with the current trough likely to continue for some time, port draw-off is low compared to long term trends.
Forest industry is clearly concerned about the current log export situation and are looking at ways to increase supply to markets within the south Asia basin and Indian market opportunities.
Chris was able to bring alot of statistical information for the meeting, with the sharing of some future thoughts around where we need to diversify our markets; this created some lively discussion for us all to ponder on looking to the future.
Vote of thanks was presented by Matt Croft.
