11th September 2023 Newsletter
PRESIDENT'S COLUMN
Over the past two hectic weeks, my schedule has been filled with meetings involving various organizations. I've had productive discussions with Federated Farmers, Forest and Bird, a joint gathering with all the associations, and a one-on-one meeting with DoC. Our goal is to identify common ground and opportunities for collaboration.
Federated Farmers, NZIF, and F&B are actively seeking increased funding to manage browsing mammals, particularly goats and deer. Additionally, with Federated Farmers, we've been addressing concerns about the upcoming fire season and expressing our apprehensions regarding FENZ's readiness. It's now indisputable that we're facing a fairly extreme El Niño, and the looming threat of wildfires is a major concern.
Initial talks with DoC have revolved around mammal browsing and the ambitious CCC requirement to establish 300,000 hectares of new native forest. These discussions are in their early stages, and we anticipate forming smaller working groups from both organisations to delve deeper into these topics.
As for the joint associations, FICA, WPMA, TIF, FOA, FFA, and NTP convened to explore ways to collaborate for the betterment of the entire sector. Notably, FOA and WPMA recently appointed new CEOs, providing an opportunity for us to get to know each other better. We're collaborating on a joint briefing for the incoming government. NZIF is likely to produce its own briefing as well as contributing additional insights to the joint briefing. It's crucial that all associations work together where we can, as fragmented efforts have led to politicians and officials overlooking our concerns. While disagreements may arise, improved communication should be our priority in the coming years.
In other institute news, I hope you all have marked next year's conference in Nelson on your calendars, set for 5th - 7th September 2024. We're currently seeking sponsors, so I encourage you to approach your companies about sponsorship, which allows us to keep attendance fees reasonable and organise more networking events. CPD sessions will be held on the 5th, and I strongly urge members, especially Registered members with CPD requirements, to participate.
I'm eagerly anticipating the ANZIF conference in a few weeks, which promises an extensive programme with captivating presenters. Special thanks to Russell Dale and Jack Palmer for their committee work. There are still spots available for those sitting on the fence about attending. AirNZ is currently offering discounted flights to Australia, so consider joining us for what promises to be a remarkable event.
To those who have recently reached out to me, I appreciate your input, and I'll aim to respond in the coming weeks as time permits.
As always, please don't hesitate to share your thoughts and areas of concern with me or this newsletter. In the meantime, I hope you all have a productive and enjoyable fortnight as we keep a close watch on the unfolding El Niño impact on our shores.
Thank you
James
MEMBER'S VOICE
Email from a Member:
Just read your latest newsletter. You are doing an outstanding job for the Institute and industry as a whole in the most difficult circumstances imaginable. I am sure the rest of the membership would agree. Well done. I commend your reaching out to Forest and Bird and to the Feds. Building bridges with these organisations is one of the most effective strategies available. I support your continued engagement with the media. It will always be frustrating and feel pointless but having a voice in the debate is necessary.
Best wishes

Forest and Rural Fire Landscape Performance Assessment Concerns
Under the Fire and Emergency NZ Act 2017 (the Act), Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) has legislative responsibility for the reduction, readiness, response, and recovery activities involving unwanted vegetation fires in New Zealand.
When required, the forestry sector supports FENZ to prevent the spread of unwanted vegetation fires within or threatening forestry lands. Large forest owners generally have a forest fire plan that supports the functions of FENZ in the management of fire in the forest and rural landscape.
As a Crown entity, FENZ must produce a Statement of Performance Expectations (SPE) under the Crown Entities Act 2004 to support accountability, transparency, and good performance. The purpose of a SPE is to:
- Enable the responsible Minister to participate in setting the annual performance expectations of the Crown entity
- Enable Parliament to be informed of those expectations, and
- Provide a base against which actual performance can be assessed.
The SPE is a critical document for FENZ as it is the document that requires FENZ to set out what it will deliver and how it will report on its progress and performance. This reporting enables the monitoring department, ie., the Department of Internal Affairs and the Minister of Internal Affairs, to fulfill their roles.

Resilience Workshop for Our Future Foresters and wider forestry community in NAPIER
Presenter: Dr Hillary Bennett, Director, Leading Safety Ltd
Future Foresters are looking forward to hosting a free resilience workshop for our Future Foresters and wider forestry community in the Hawkes Bay and Gisborne on the 21st and 22nd of September.
This year has been a tough and challenging one for many, including our forestry industry. Thriving at Work is a resilience focused workshop that will explore how to support foresters to thrive and not simply survive. If people are the bedrock of the success to any forestry operation, then our mental wellbeing is of utmost importance. It will examine both the way work is organized and managed as well as develop practical habits for improving physical and mental wellbeing.
Dr Hillary Bennet is a Director of Leading Safety, a consultancy specialising in the leadership of safety and wellbeing, the assessment and development of safety and wellbeing culture, human factors, and workplace health and safety. Hillary is a registered psychologist and is passionate about supporting people to thrive both at work and at home. She developed the New Zealand Business Leaders Health and Safety Forum’s mental health and wellbeing guides. In 2019 Hillary was awarded the New Zealand SafeGuard Lifelong Contribution to Health and Safety Award for her contribution to safety leadership within the New Zealand forestry industry.
Our Hawkes Bay and Gisborne Future Foresters Regional Leaders, Harry Dineen and Buck Trafford have been putting in the mahi behind the scenes to pull this one together. There will be food provided at the workshops and of course opportunity for networking afterwards.
