PRESIDENTS COLUMN
I am sitting on the Interislander heading South for a break with my daughter over the holidays. It is a nice feeling to stop for a while and get out of the day to day. NZIF seems to be extremely busy at present and taking a lot of time. There have been and continue to be many meetings with MPI on the Forest Advisors registration plan, too many submissions, a new council to bed in, a conference just around the corner and the need to update our rules as changes come in to effect around both charities (Foundation) and associations. My plan is to switch off and forget about all this and appreciate the mountains and bush for a week. As such this column is very short, but it is also a plea to all members to help us out and this week to please:
- Register for the conference.
- If you are a company consider sponsoring the conference.
- If you have time volunteer to help with the submission.
You may have seen communication from TuR in regards to the Forest Advisors Registration which said “We are considering options for a cost neutral fee structure for those who register with both the Forestry Authority and New Zealand Institute of Forestry”. Please note this is not finalised yet, but is it likely this will be for NZIF Registered Members, with a potential for a discount for all other members. I therefore encourage those members who are not NZIF registered but will be considered a Forest Advisor under the act to consider becoming NZIF registered and to apply as soon as possible. It will be the cheapest way to be a forest advisor and a member of the NZIF.
I look forward to seeing you at the conference and the AGM.
Thanks
James
CONFERENCE 2022
Conference Update on behalf of Subcommittee
This week we extend a special invite to our retired members noting as of today we have only one registered to attend the conference. Attending the conference provides a unique opportunity to not only remain connected with former industry colleagues, but to also share your wealth of knowledge particularly with the next generation of foresters. As an added incentive, retired members are eligible for discounted attendance at $200 for both days including the awards dinner or $150 (excluding the awards dinner).
Please do keep the registrations rolling in as it makes it a lot easier on the organizing committee and finalizing some of the logistics. Please note there are still a few places on the leadership CPD course so please think about who in your organization might benefit from attending this. Also of note we have extended the timeframe of the field trips to be back at the Hilton by 5:30pm just to allow some more margin against the vagaries of Auckland traffic.
Don’t hesitate to contact me or any of the organizing committee with any queries or if you would like to sponsor as we still have a few opportunities available.
Accommodation Option for Conference Delegates:
The Hilton Auckland has offered Conference Delegates the discounted room rate of $230.00 for the nights of Sunday 11th and Monday 12th September. To book see here
Please note that is discounted rate is only available until the 31st July 2022.

About the NZIF Foundation
The NZIF Foundation was established in 2011 by the NZ Institute of Forestry to advance education in relation to forestry. This includes encouraging and supporting forestry related research, education and training through the provision of grants, scholarships and prizes; promoting the acquisition, development and dissemination of forestry related knowledge and information and other activities that do not conflict with the charitable purpose. For the purposes of these awards, forestry is broadly defined to include all those activities involved in the management and use of forests and their products, the objects of which are the production of wood or other forest benefits and the maintenance of the environment in its most beneficial form. All forests in New Zealand, whatever their purpose, are encompassed in the definition.

HAVE YOUR SAY
President James makes good sense in his comments on the potential for using mass timber technology in the built environment.
Is the potential for significant contributions from this to our national carbon fixation targets being adequately researched? This could enable a policy environment which could, in turn, provide incentives to make radical changes in building practice?
Should the Institute be helping to build a lobby in this direction?
