PRESIDENT REPORT
Some of you may have noticed we are once again providing links to interesting media articles in the newsletter. We do this to try to add benefit to members. I hope some of you find it interesting, as it takes time to put together. If anyone sees an article they think members would like, please send it to admin@nzif.org.nz so we can add it to the next newsletter.
This week there seems to be a trend of media articles about reafforestation of native; however as you read the articles you will quickly realise projects are often community based and not of large scale. It brings to question how are we going to plant 25000 hectares a year target the Climate Commission wants? Andrew McEwen proposed a Special Interest Group to explore this in the last newsletter. I don’t believe there has been a large amount of members volunteering to make up the SIG. I wonder therefore if members believe NZIF have a role in this space? Personally I feel NZIF represents professional forestry on all species and forest types. As such we should be at the forefront of helping advise and implementing projects which will ensure the above target is met; but I sense very little interest or indeed concerns from members. I would like to challenge you all to consider what you role as a professional forester is; yes I understand first and foremost it is to your paying work, but do you have a role to use your skills and knowledge to benefit NZ inc?
It was also pleasing to see Tauranga city councils plans to build a mass timber office space. It seems we have been talking about using timber for larger buildings for a large number of years, but very little has occurred in NZ at scale. Large multi story wooden buildings are being built overseas; but it would be great if NZ was seen as the leader in the world in this space. As a sector our messaging around this has been poor and often mixed. Everyone I talk to feels this just makes sense, yet all around the country I see buildings (some only 2-3 stories high) use tilt slab concrete. Our messaging is not getting to the decision makers and we certainly are not making it easy for these decision makers to move away from their old styles. It brings to question where the ‘central’ messaging around this (and numerous other forestry related topics) should come from. All the associations often work alone (NZIF is just as guiltily of this) on messaging and there is no planning of key messages for all associations to get out. I am not sure how to solve this, but we need to do better for the benefit of everyone involved in forestry and wood processing.
I asked for members to register for the conference in the last newsletter. There have not been many registrations since. Please can you get on the website now and register. It helps the committee and council with planning and also gives confidence to sponsors. Please don’t delay your registration any longer, book it now. For those who would like to attend but want to attend via their work, get up from your desk now and go suggest it to your boss. The conference committee have organised some fantastic speakers and the theme is extremely relevant. I know it will be a relevant and interesting conference where all members will be able to add to their CPD.
We continue working with MPI on the Forest Advisors registration scheme; however our advice to members remains the same. We recommend members do not register on the 6th of August. You have a year until you must by law, and our current thinking is if the scheme goes ahead as it is currently portrayed to us then we will be seeking an exemption for members.
As always if you have any questions on the above or anything else please do not hesitate to contact me at president@nzif.org.nz.
I look forward to seeing all of you at the conference.
Thanks
James
CONFERENCE
Conference update
The Hilton have kindly extended our discount to the end of July only – if you want an amazing deal on your accommodation please do get on and register for the conference and book via the web link provided.
Since last newsletter the focus was on CPD’s – this week we wanted to highlight arguably the best parts of the conference which is catching up in person with other industry professionals. By popular request we have tried to maximise the time for informal interaction and the Hilton has an excellent conference space that facilitates this. We are in good hands for the Future Foresters quiz night - with Sheridan Ashford helping to organize it at a pub in the Viaduct. This promises to be a very memorable night and with tickets strictly limited by venue capacity this is first come first served.
Monday morning kicks off with the Women in Forestry Breakfast sponsored by FICA where Prue Younger and Angela Bull (Wairakei Estate CEO) will address attendees. On Monday evening we have pre wards dinner drinks (big thanks to PF Olsen), followed by the awards dinner itself supported by Margules Groome which are both being hosted at the Hilton which keeps it very simple.
We look forward to seeing members and non-members alike at the conference.
