Registered Member Newsletter
Dear Registered Members
It has been a challenging year with the ongoing impact of Covid 19. The Registration Board hope you; your family and businesses have weathered these challenges and we look forward to 2022 being a better year for all of NZ.
Many of you may have attended the Institute’s Special General Meeting on Wednesday 10th November where 93% of the nearly 100 members participating, supported the motion:
• agree the NZIF Council and Registration Board continue working with MPI over the conditions and responsibilities for implementing and managing the registration of forestry advisers under the Forests (Regulations of Log Traders and Forestry Advisers) Amendment Act 2020.
• the conditions for the delegation will require changes to the NZIF Rules, and Council must present rule changes to a SGM of NZIF members for their approval once negotiations for the delegation have been completed.
You may have noted in the 29 November 2021 Institute Newsletter from the President, James Treadwell “We will be advertising soon for a position to help us work with MPI on the formation of the Forest Advisors registration scheme. This will be a busy short-term contract (up to August 2022) which could well extend after this date. It will be an exciting role and will be at the forefront of designing the future for all professional foresters. If this is something you are interested in keep an eye out for the advert or contact me.”
Te Uru Rakau – New Zealand Forest Service on 29 November 2021 released a consultation document “Registration for Log Traders and Forestry Advisers Proposed regulations under the Forests (Regulation of Log Traders and Forestry Advisers) Amendment Act 2020”

Note submissions are due by 17 January 2022. You are encouraged to make a submission.
The Board had a zoom meeting on 30 November 2021. Some matters to highlight from the meeting include:
1. The Board discussed how it best supports the Institute working with MPI over the conditions and responsibilities for implementing and managing the registration of forestry advisers under the Forests (Regulations of Log Traders and Forestry Advisers) Amendment Act 2020
2. The Board approved the addition to the Procedure Manual of:
a. a section providing documented guidance to the Board on how Board Members should manage any conflict of interest that may arise in them undertaking Registration Board duties. This will assist in the Board acting with consistently over time on managing any conflict of interest matter.
b. some materials on how it may progress the recognition and quality assurance of members, wishing to be formally recognized for specialist skills they hold. You may recall from the last newsletter that the Board at its 1 September 2021 meeting temporarily suspended the provision of specialist skills recognition for any new Registered Member applications. This suspension is still in place.
3. The Board thought it would be helpful to remind Registered Members at this time of the year, to check their progress on obtaining their minimum annual requirement of 10 hours of Continuing Professional Development (CPD), either structured and or unstructured (note the CPD year ends on 31 December 2021). You must have a minimum of 10 hours of CPD completed as one of the criteria to receive an annual Certificate of Registration in 2022. Also, members should note that even through the minimum requirement CPD in any one year is 10 hours you must, over a five-year period, have 100 hours of CPD. This is an average of 20 hours per annum. Also, of these 100 hours, there must be a minimum of 50 hours of structured CPD. We encourage each member to target the 20 hours p.a. and not just 10 hours otherwise there may be a big catch up required in the last year. I suggest all registered members should review the NZIF CPD policy from time to time to ensure they are following it. The policy is available athttps://www.nzif.org.nz/about-us/governing-documents/
The Board has decided to provide Registered Members with more insight as to who are the people who make up the Board. So as part of each regular newsletter we are profiling a specific Board member. In the September 2021 newsletter we profiled Ellanese (Elley) Mytton the most recent addition to assist the Board. This month we wish to profile our longest serving Board Member, Ian Page.
Ian has worked in and been associated with the forestry sector since 1966 when he arrived in NZ from the UK. Ian has been active in the NZIF, spending time on the NZIF Council and chairing a local Northland section for several years in the 1980s. Before becoming a Retired Member, Ian was the longest serving Registered Forester in New Zealand (registration No 3) and is currently in his fifth term on the NZIF Registration Board.
With the end of year nearly upon us I would like to thank the Registrar, Board members and Elley Mytton in her co-opted role, for their on-going contribution to assisting with the maintenance and enhancement of Professional Standards in New Zealand Forestry. I also thank NZIF administration, Raewyn Agnew and Jay Matthes for their work associated with the Board and Registered members.
Stay safe and well.
On behalf of the Registration Board
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
