Abstract: Forest stands are often inventoried in order to monitor the states of crops before and after silvicultural events, to estimate current dimensions so that they can be projected in growth and yield models to value stands, or prior to harvest in order to predict yields by log product under different log cutting strategies. In addition a logging waste assessment is sometimes carried out after harvest to determine the amount of unharvested material that is of value. Traditional sampling with plots is the primary means of sampling at time of writing, but new methods exploiting remote sensing are developing rapidly and may soon replace traditional plot sampling techniques.
