Abstract: The New Zealand Institute of Forestry will soon be celebrating its centenary. This paper, largely based upon a review of the early minute books of the Institute, provides an account of some of the events around the founding and early years of its operation and identifies several of the early people involved. From the outset the goal was to further the development of forestry capability and the interests of professional foresters in New Zealand and there was a strong interest in networking and collegiality. Notably some of the issues raised 100 years ago are still relevant today.
