Abstract: Mārahau Forest and the surrounding community was impacted significantly by ex-Tropical Cyclone Gita in February 2018. After the event the re-establishment plan for the forest was reviewed with the result that some areas were deemed unsuitable for ongoing production forestry. A plan was put in place for assisted natural regeneration of the areas deemed unsuitable for production through planting a nurse crop of mānuka. The Ministry for Primary Industries, Tasman District Council, Forest Management Group and the iwi landowners (Ngāti Tama and Ngāti Rārua) worked proactively together to find a solution to a challenging situation.
