Abstract: Edible pine kernels – or pine nuts – are commercially extracted, processed and sold from several pine species, until recently exclusively in the Northern Hemisphere. One local business (Pinoli Ltd) has developed plantations of European stone pine (Pinus pinea) and vertically integrated the operations through to wholesale and retail branded pine nuts, for domestic and export sale and consumption. This paper briefly charts the story of how this business originated and developed and details some lessons learned and thoughts on future potential.
