Abstract: Forest biosecurity surveillance is undertaken in New Zealand primarily to detect new forest pests. Currently this activity is shared between government and industry. The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF) operates surveillance of high-risk sites (e.g. ports, transitional facilities) and small plantation forests, maintains several specific pest surveillance packages and promotes passive surveillance (detection of pests by the public, scientists etc). The Department of Conservation (DoC) runs surveillance in areas at risk from hitchhiking pests associated with tourists, and the Forest Owners Association (FOA) administers surveys covering the large plantation forests.
