Abstract: GLOBAL TRADE Logs are a widely used and traded commodity. Total global wood consumption for 2002 is estimated at 3.5 billion m3, of which 1.6 billion m3 was for industrial use with the balance for fuelwood and charcoal. The world’s forest resources however are unevenly distributed, allowing timber-rich countries to trade with regions that experience shortfalls in domestic supply. In 2002 118 million m3 of logs were traded between countries. Most of this international log trade was overland but a third was shipped.
