Abstract: In the ten years following the corporatisation and privatisation of New Zealand's state forests the annual harvest increased 76 percent. In the year ended March 1987, 9 million cubic metres of roundwood was harvested. By 1997 harvesting had reached 16 million cubic metres. The Asian financial crisis of 1997/1998 halted the trend of increasing harvesting rates. There was a slight decrease in 1997 then the annual harvest remained relatively static up until 1999.
