Abstract: The history of forestry in New Zealand has been one of conflict and of debates that still continue in various forms. The result of that conflict is a country where natural forests have been severely affected by two successive waves of colonisation over the past 1100 years, but nonetheless where the forest industry has been developed into one of the key contributors to the economy.
