Abstract: This paper is about the definition and emphasis of social licence activities completed by the forestry sector in New Zealand’s regional communities. The new Discover Forestry organisation has been launched by the eight Wood Councils of New Zealand to deliver and expand on social licence programmes based around school programmes and regional events promoting forestry and local members. What has happened to the media version of forestry activities? Why has there been such a backlash towards anything that involves pine and what can ‘forestry’ as a sector do to combat these negative influences and ensure that our ‘good news stories’ get heard? Individuals and forestry businesses can change perceptions in their own communities, and with their own actions, if they place value and allow staff the time and information to contribute.
