Abstract: Variety is the spice of life Any diet that relies almost solely on one type of food can at best be described as boring and at worst dangerous. A recent international comment that New Zealand must have an enormous appetite for risk, after observing that over 90% of our eggs are in the radiata basket, highlighted the issue. Have we actively chosen this position or has it happened more passively? It has been helped along by the ability that radiata has to tolerate being planted on a very wide range of sites, reliably producing volume, and with a ready demand in domestic and international markets.
