Abstract: The pulp and paper industry is one of the most global in nature. Trees are most productively grown in scattered pockets of forest, but demand is dispersed by a different set of factors. Decisions made in Singapore, Memphis and Auckland have a significant effect on markets elsewhere. There are three factors behind global demand for forest products - • The rise in standard of living in large parts of China, Brazil and India creates discretionary income which their citizens can apply to products which are read, such as newspapers and magazines, and those that are packaged such as manufactured goods, agricultural products and fast foods • Print media and business forms are rapidly being abandoned in North America and Western Europe, leading to a major realignment of business strategies
