Abstract: I recently had the opportunity to enjoy a 4 month sabbatical at the School of Forestry, Canterbury University. On various occasions I was confronted with the question - “what is a forest engineer?” This was not just from students contemplating joining the program, but also from current students intrigued by future employment opportunities. In addition, the Institute for Professional Engineers NZ (IPENZ) panel, evaluating all the engineering programs at Canterbury University, was seeking (and found!) justification for having an accredited forest engineering program.
