Abstract: There is often a tendency to assess market prospects on the basis of the situation prevailing at the time of such assessment. This seems to be the case with New Zealand planted forests at present. This paper attempts to gauge the outlook for plantation wood on the basis of long term structural trends. It examines the movement of some of the key variables used in the comprehensive FAO Global Forest Products Outlook Study and the likely impact of key recent developments. Based on these it is concluded that market prospects for plantation wood are good. But exporters will continue to face trade barriers and competition from substitute products.
