Abstract: This paper discusses the four contemporary global trends affecting the forest sector in New Zealand. These trends are corporate social responsibility, protection of natural forests, tackling climate change, and product certification. In addition, a coalition based on the need, in a greenhouse-constrained world, for strategy to advance the use of wood in place of steel, cement, aluminium and fossil fuels (in the case of industrial boilers and transport fuels) is briefly discussed. The New Zealand forest industry has recognized the need to work with other stakeholders to achieve sustainable development.
