Abstract: Tools for quantitative analysis now available to the forest manager range from techniques to provide more accurate data through to modelling systems which allow comprehensive analyses using that data. This paper reviews the evolution of information tools over the last 25 years from manual procedures to largely computer-based methods. Processes for forest mapping, inventory, management of stand records, stand and forest estate modelling are reviewed, recent trends are discussed and future opportunities are described.
