Abstract: Decision-support systems are integrated software packages comprising tools for processing both numerical and qualitative information (ideas). They are likely to be essential in future for forestry companies, as they facilitate consistent, thorough, and rapid decision-making. They differ from traditional forestry software packages in that they can process ideas, keep track of uncertainty, have higher levels of integration among software tools, and are easy to use. The development of programming tools for processing knowledge is reviewed. Steps in the development of decision-support systems are described, with emphasis on those required for knowledge-based software. Two decision-support systems designed for forestry are outlined.
