Abstract: A major project has been proposed to develop a New Zealand-wide land-cover database, generated primarily from satellite imagery. A pilot investigation of the viability, methods, costs and benefits of the project is described. This involved classification of a Landsat TM image of part of the central North Island into 15 land-cover types.

A subsequent study was undertaken to compare areas of planted and natural forest in the Taupo District derived from the Landsat TM image with existing maps and databases of forest information. Reasons for differences between satellite image classification data and existing records are considered, and suggestions made for the rationalistion of further validation of satellite imagery classification.
