Abstract: An account is given of some aspects of an international symposium on protection forestry and associated activities during a visit to north China in June 1990. The development and features of the 'Green Great Wall' tree planting project are outlined. Although improved living standards appear substantial through soil stabilisation, better crops and the availability and sale of timber, some criticism is made of the limited choice of tree species and the even age of many district plantings.
