Abstract: An informal nation-wide survey of 30 forestry professionals shows a high level of awareness, understanding, and strength of opinion on the Crown Forest Asset Sale. 72% of the professionals with an opinion are opposed to the sale and 28% favour it. The reasons given by those in favour of the sale centre around the right of the Government to do so and the publicly stated government reasons for the move. The reasons given by those opposed centre around the methods of the sale as much as or more so than the principles involved. Based on the large proportion of professionals in opposition, the author concludes that the New Zealand forestry profession has a professional obligation to work with the Government immediately, during and after the sale to make the treatment of its State exotic forests professionally acceptable and in the best long-term interest of the nation.
