Abstract: Leon Macintosh Ellis arrived in New Zealand in 1920 as the newly appointed first Director of Forestry. He brought with him wide experience and a broad vision of forestry obtained from working in Canada, France and Scotland, features which were reflected in his blueprint for New Zealand forestry which he produced remarkably quickly after his arrival. He placed emphasis on the sustained yield management of the indigenous forests but, for a range of reasons, his plans for these were not realised, with consequences for the forest conservation scene today
