Abstract: Over the 10- to 20-year age range, Pinus radiata stands established in the 1960s show mortality rates substantially below those established between 1945-55 and 1939-42. A reappraisal of the economics of thinning is recommended, and users of growth models are warned to expect over prediction of mortality.
