Abstract: Estimates by the 1981 New Zealand Forestry Conference Working Party on Training and Employment of the total number of new and replacement foresters required from 1981-1995 are critically discussed with reference to forest management, wood processing, research, postgraduate training, advice and extension work and public relations. It is estimated that the University of Canterbury School of Forestry will need to double its output of graduates over the next 10-15 yr in order to keep pace with planned planting programmes.
