Abstract: Only a few attempts have been made in New Zealand to systematically explore and describe recreational awareness, attitudes, and behaviour. This paper discusses the initial findings from a survey of urban Aucklanders, which focused on recreation in general and forest recreation in particular. As well as demonstrating the obvious need for greater publicity about forest recreational opportunities, the survey clearly indicates the public's desire for minimal facilities catering for a wide range of age and interest groups. Some brief points are made on the implications of these findings for forest recreation policy-makers and planners.
