Abstract: A discussion of work by the Energy Farming Research Group set up by the New Zealand Energy Research and Development Committee. Analysis of various processes for the production of transport fuel showed that those converting fodder beet to ethanol (17.5 cents/litre of gasoline [petrol] equivalent at June 1977 prices) and radiata pine to methanol (19.0 cents) are the most economic; gasoline price was 12.8 cents/litre at December 1978. Self-sufficiency in liquid fuel by 2000 is quite feasible; some of the practical details are discussed, including size of installation.
