Abstract: A historical review of forestry practice in the context of world social and technological changes, stressing the rarity of true innovation, advocating an approach to modern problems of forestry development that gives greater weight to some of the concepts and values of early foresters, and urging that technological development should be accompanied by proper consideration of its social costs.
