Abstract: The management of forests for recreation and amenity, to confer off-site benefits and to be urban palliatives will be important in the future and must be planned now. A most pressing need for the future in New Zealand is the provision of adequate user-oriented recreational opportunities which include forest trees and stands in our cities and towns and on their peripheries. Foresters need to enhance their ecological expertise, to become more socially aware, and to communicate effectively with the public.
