Abstract: Land forms and soil types limit the range of sites suitable for exotic forestry in Westland; only steep, well-drained hill sites are planted. Current establishment practice requires careful planning and integration of roading, logging and land clearing activities. The direction of working within a forest is important if fire is to be used to best advantage for land clearing. Radiata pine is the most suitable exotic species for planting in Westland
