Abstract: Each forest area has its own particular problems concerning the extraction and harvesting of logs. Machinery and equipment suitable for one area will not necessarily suit another, but the basic problems are the same. What equipment to use? When should it be used? What expenditure is available? And, probably the most pertinent, how can existing costs be maintained or reduced?
This paper attempts to show methods, broadly applicable to all age classes of trees, of calculating varying costs by different combinations of machines and men, particularly with regard to thinnings of the younger age classes.
