Eyrewell Forest: A Search for Stable Management

Abstract: Eyrewell Forest, of predominantly even-aged, 30-year-old Pinus radiata, was severely damaged during a series of gales in March, 1964. The paper describes the early history and management before windthrow, the condition of the forest before and after windthrow, and discusses limitations of the site in terms of climatic , edaphic, and management factors. Root development and stand structure are described in detail, and corrective measures required to ensure development of manageable stands. Proposals for future management are outlined, including deep ripping of the gravel soils to increase root penetration and improve tree stability.
