Abstract: The introduction of the potato to New Zealand at the end of the eighteenth century caused considerable changes in Maori agriculture. There was a great expansion in shifting cultivation over forest land and there are records of Maori fires having destroyed very large areas of forest. It is suggested that European settlement did not accelerate the rate of forest destruction but merely continued it' on the same scale.
