Abstract: An evaluation has been made of the growth rate in North Auckland of kauri (Agathis australis), toara (Podocarpus totara), miro (P. ferrugineus), rimu (Dacrydium cupressinum), and tanekaha (Phyllocladus trichomanoides). The data suggest that the best areas in which to manage these softwood species are not necessarily those in which they are most abundant at present. While only limited areas of forest are likely to prove amenable to intensive management a much greater acreage could be considered for extensive management as multi-purpose forests.
