Abstract: Tree planting at high levels in New Zealand is reviewed, details being taken from two regions in the North Island and four in the South Island. Both conifers and leaf-trees from Western America and Europe show promise at middle levels up to 4,000 ft. There is, as yet, insufficient evidence to indicate critical altitudes and sites for the species tried so far. Further ecological investigations with both indigenous and exotic species are indicated before the problems involved in re-vegetating mountain catchments can be solved.
