Abstract: New Zealand’s current energy crisis, together with its climate change commitments, provides an opportunity for the forestry sector to be part of solving this. This paper looks at the reason for using biomass as an alternative to importing fossil fuels such as liquified natural gas (LNG), its abundance, pricing, and the unique properties of torrefied biomass. It concludes with a discussion on how torrefied biomass could have a role in achieving the goal of net carbon zero by 2050.
