Abstract: OneFortyOne New Zealand processes, transports and stores low-value fibre, which was previously treated as waste, to supply the local biofuel market. The material has been collected and sold as a method for reducing residual wood volume (residues) left on-site after harvesting. The operation was undertaken without a confirmed market or a complete understanding of the volume of material available. However, given the desire to reduce the risk associated with material left on-site, the business was willing to incur the cost of preparing residues for sale without knowing exactly where the market would be. The project has since developed into a successful operation, supplying a long-term local consumer. The success can largely be attributed to working with committed and capable partners throughout the supply chain. In the future, OneFortyOne New Zealand hopes to find complementary markets for similar material beyond what is currently supplied.
