14th March 2022 Newsletter
PRESIDENTS COLUMN
It has been pleasing to see the number of nominations for council and registration board. As we have more nominations than positions we will be running an election for these positions over the next two weeks. I would like to thank everyone who has put their name forward and I encourage all members to take part in the election and seriously consider who would be best for moving NZIF forward over the next two years, years we know will change NZIF one way or another due to the formation of the Forest Advisors Bill. Please give each nominee considered thought and please don’t just tick the first 6 boxes!
We only had one nominee for each of the Officer positions and as such there will be no election for President, VP, Treasurer and Secretary. We will announce these positions after the election when we announce the results of the council and Registration Board elections.
A number of councillors have decided not to stand for another term and I would like to thank them all for their service. Some have been in the role for over 14 years. We will recognise their service at this years AGM and I look forward to working with them until the end of this councils term being June this year.
As mentioned last newsletter there are a number of submissions due on various topics. If any member would like to lend a hand we would appreciate it. We seem to be snowed under with the tight timeframes and sheer number of submissions currently, whilst also trying to work with MPI on the Forest Advisors Registration scheme build. All councillors have a day job as well so time is something most of us don’t have much of.
We are living in interesting times. I am well aware many of you are feeling the stress of rising costs and covid. Can I ask you check in on other members you know. One of the objects of NZIF is to ‘encourage fraternity and esprit de corps’ and now more than ever we need to be doing this. Likewise if you are feeling stressed try to get to a local section meeting to network with other members or give a member a ring for a chat. We are all in the same boat and need to support each other.
Take care and look after each other.
Regards
James

FORESTRY EVENTS
Canterbury Local Section are inviting you to attend a zoom event
Speaker: Dr Sarah Wyse, Ecologist at the NZ School of Forestry, University of Canterbury, 7pm, 17th March.
About the speaker: Dr Wyse is an experienced forest ecologist with a distinguished pedigree in research. She has recently been appointed to an academic staff position at the NZ School of Forestry
Topic: Forest ecology at the regeneration stage
Short summary: The regeneration stage is arguably the most important stage in forest ecology, as it underpins vegetation successions, drives community composition, and is integral to both plant conservation and restoration, and to plant invasions. In this talk I will highlight the role of the regeneration stage in forest ecology using three case studies from my own work: kauri forest ecology, ex situ plant conservation, and the issue of wilding conifers in New Zealand.
