Past and Current International Recognition of Sustainable Forestry’s Contribution to the Objectives of the ACCTS

International recognition of forests delivery of a very broad range of economic and ecosystem services is not a new concept and should be included specifically in ACCTS. Sustainable forestry was formally recognised in the 1992 Rio “Earth Summit” agreement over 25 years ago.  Successive agreements since have made specific provision for the role of forests as sinks of atmospheric CO2, protective of water and as repositories of valued biodiversity.
