The internet of things - wireless sensor networks and their application to forestry

Abstract: Small wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have the potential to change the way forests are managed in the future. Already used widely in agricultural and horticultural situations to monitor and control production, what basis do they have as a tool for the modern forest manager? We propose that WSNs could enable a transformation in the way forests are managed in future, by collecting and relaying key management data in real time, as well as helping to better understand complex relationships within forest ecosystems. However, forested environments pose some challenges to deployment, such as reduced signals from vegetation, loss of connectivity and the scale-up factors.
